LOCAL PARTNER Bala Vikasa Social Service Society (Officially registered non-government organisation with 25years experience in the sector of promoting sustainabledevelopment projects in the state of Telangana, andwith the positiveresult of the construction of 40 water puri-fication plants to its credit.)

THE PROBLEM

One of the greates problems in the state of AndhraPradesh is represented by the high concentration of flu-orine in the water strata. The maximum percentageestablished by the World HealthOrganisation (W.H.O.)is 1 ppm (1mg/lit.), in that superior percentages are par-ticularly damaging to health especially causing dental andspinal column fluorosis for example. Since the majorityof the population, 3, 000 villages (approx. 10 millionpeople), use the water reserves on land contaminated byfluorine with levels of contamination varying from 2ppm to24ppm, School for Children, in collaboration with Bala Vikasa Social Service Society (local partners),intend to set up a project by which the poorer population(who liveon 60 rupees per day,equal to 1 euro) maypurchase purified water at the costof 1 rupee per 20 litres(in comparison with the 10/15 rupees per 20 litres on offerbythe multinationals).

The programme will be carriedout byinstalling plants which use the most evoluted“Reverse Osmosis
Technology” purifying techniquescapable of removing, together with excess fluorine,other minerals, bacteria and smells.

AIMS

1. Tofacilitate the purchase of purified water at the price of1rupee per 20 litres in rural communities in the districts ofKhammam and Warangal (Telangana)
2. To improve the hygienic and health conditions of the population in the above mentioned area
3. To streng then community relations through the forming of maintenance and functioning committees
4. To promote an awareness campaign on the meslinked to the correct use of water resources and the illnesses resulting from excessive fluorine in the water(dental and spinal column fluorosis)

Villages in the Waragnal and Khammam districteffecting a total of 15,000

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR BENEFICIARIES

1. Villages with more than 2ppm fluorine level in water reserves
2. Villages who carry out the project involving the population without any discrimination of caste, religion,politics etc
3. Beneficiaries who contribute 20% of the plant cost
4. Communities which supply a source of drinkable water
5. Communities which supply physical space for plant installation
6. Communities capable of working in collaboration with the village committee
7. Communities capable of following the project standard regulations
