CONSTRUCTION OF TOILETS
PROPOSING BODY School for children Onlus
OPERATIONAL AREA Villages in the district of Khammam, Telangana, India
LOCAL PARTNER Diocesan Charitable Trust, Khammam
NEEDS ANALYSIS
The diocese began a programme, named Habitat 2000, in the year 2000. It is a part financing schemeto help the poor and victims of floods and other natural disasters to construct low cost permanent houses.
These houses, however, do not have toilets.
Owing to the lack of toilets, most people use the surrounding fields to defecate before sunrise or after sunset.
As a result, the area has become unclean and unhygienic.
As they the do not have sufficient water when they go out to defecate, they are unable to wash their hands and private parts properly, which can lead to infected genitals and other health problems, such as cholera, hepatitis, diarrhea.
AIM
We are planning to construct household toilets to improve thesurrounding environment and increasethelevel of dignity for the people, providing health and hygiene of the community.
The proposed project would no doubt enhance the selfesteem of women and help reduce the gap between one of India’s poorest castes and the rest of society.
It would also help reduce the number of deaths caused by snake bits and reduce cases of diarrhea, hepatic and reproductive track infections, and other infectious diseases.
Its positive impact on the lives of the community would be evident through economic returns and improvements in health.
